The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Going into the 1920 German Film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, I was honestly feeling pretty unexcited and dreading it. My idea of a black-and-white, silent, old film, was not a good one. I was expecting a boring and predictable story, and while it is not my favorite film ever, as a horror lover, I can most definitely see how this film sets the tone for horror across the board. The aspect I loved most about this film was how genuinely creepy I thought it was. While the film didn't necessarily scare me, it really had that creepy and unsettling feel that I personally adore about horror films. I love horror films because of the suspense and uneasiness I feel from them. It makes my eyes glued to the screen, and that's especially what I enjoyed most about this film. Another thing I truly admired about this film was the realization, for me, that one of my favorite films, Shutter Island, heavily took inspiration from this film. The major aspect that was used, was the plot twist at the end. Both films contain the same plot twist, as the main characters were the murderers/mentally insane ones the whole time. Knowing that one of my favorite films took inspiration from this one made my love grow for it even more. Although I did watch this film at 2x speed, it was way more enjoyable than I could have ever predicted.
