The first shot of the scene creates a feeling of suspense. As you can see, there is an empty space to the right of Brody. It makes us wonder why there is a space, and if the shark is going to pop up, to fill that space, which happens in a later shot.
There are multiple shots in which the shark is pictured in the distance, between Quint and Brody, emphasizing that the shark is the center of attention to the men on board, and the film in general
Jaws is the first blockbuster because of its thrill and exhilaration. Viewing this film was new and exciting for viewers, making them rush to the theater to see it. Jaws made over $470 million, and this was largely due to its advertising, and this way of marketing is still used today.
In this film, we see Quint as a tough, working man, who often believes he knows what is best due to his experience. Along with this, he makes many sexist comments that contribute to this character. Although initially portrayed as tough, he is the only man who dies on the boat. I enjoyed this little detail, as it proves that he is not the smartest and toughest after all.
Hello Marisa! Your analysis' are very nicely written! I appreciate how you chose the scene with "we are going to need a bigger boat" to dive more indepth with, as that was one of my favorite scenes. Also, I am intrigued on how you saw Quints death as a test against his strength and intelligence. It makes me question if the movie purposefully set up Broady as being the strongest, Hooper as the smartest, and Quint as both, only to kill of Quint in the end. Anyways, keep up the good writing!
